I’ve been a little down with the weather here in West Tennessee. The swings between warm and cold, very wet and – well – not so wet – have been frustrating. I really need to get some plants in the ground, but can’t seem to get my off days coordinated with the warmth and wet.
In the mean time, I was able to split one of my hives a few weeks ago. I lost a queen last year, and rather than requeen that hive, I combined it with another. It was late in the season, so I really didn’t get the benefit of having the extra workers pull in honey. But since my three hives emerged from the winter very strong, I decided to make a split from this hive. Things went great – it was the perfect day. I took my 11 year old son and one of the neighborhood kids with me. We even produced a video of the split. I’m ready to go check on the two hives to make sure I have good queens in each. I’m really hoping that tomorrow (4/22) will be the day.
Enjoy the video!
